An eight-year-old Port Elizabeth girl has proved that the will to do good is not determined by age.

Thabisa Dube, of Hallack Place, Park Drive, has raised enough money to send 14 tots to preschool - and she is not about to slow down.

Initially setting out to raise R21600 to send 10 children to school, she has now reached the R30000 mark, meaning at least 14 will have the opportunity.

An amount of R2160 will cover school fees for a child at preschool.

"I am so excited. My friends, teachers and family think it is awesome that I have raised so much money," Thabisa said.

The Grade 2 Theodor Herzl Primary School pupil is raising the money as part of an Afrika Tikkun initiative.

Next month, she will be tackling the Afrika Tikkun's Each One Teach One campaign at the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge in Johannesburg.

Afrika Tikkun is an NGO that provides education, health and social services to children, youths and their families through centres of excellence in townships.

It aims to empower communities to develop new generations of productive citizens.

Thabisa, who is training hard for the Afrika Tikkun's cycle challenge, said she felt great for having raised so much money.

Her mother, Zodwa, said she and Thabisa's dad, Mel, were "so proud of our little one".

"She has done her bit in raising funds by writing letters to all our family, friends and associates, who have responded by opening up their hearts and purses," she said.

"We are still going to carry on with raising funds and we hope that companies will come forward and support this worthy cause.

"She, indeed, has a heart for other children. Her next challenge will be to cycle in The Herald race next year," Zodwa said.

Thabisa, who cycles with her dad around St George's Park, took part in the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Tricycle and Junior Tours last year, and in The Herald VW Cycle Tour Kiddies' Ride in 2010 and last year.

She swims for Swim Struck and is also training to compete in the Midmar Mile at a later stage, together with her eight-year-old cousin, Tsi Tsi Dube.

Zodwa said Thabisa would like to partner up with a well-known sports personality to raise more money for the Each One Teach One campaign.

Thabisa said that even after the race in November she would like to continue raising money for the campaign.

"I want to help more children get a better education," she said.
