The Liberation that comes from facing fears!

The liberation that comes from facing one’s fears is a feeling that cannot be put into words. That moment when you finally realise that all these stories and different scenarios you create in your head, are nothing but you feeding your fears energy. That moment when you realise that the same people that tell you it is impossible to do, are actually saying this because they are just also petrified of facing their own fears. You feel like a conqueror afterwards, like the is nothing that can stop you but sadly we are all too quick to lose this feeling and we begin the process all over again of creating stories in our own mind that engulf us in fear. What has inspired me to write this is my recent trip to Bloukrans Face Adrenaline bungee-jumping in Tsitsikamma because although heights have never been a fear of mine, when I saw that bridge I was automatically engulfed in fear as it is extremely high. At 216metres, it is the highest in the world. What made matters worse is the fact that on the day I got there to jump I was told the were no spaces and I had to come another day for my jump; now you can imagine how my fear kept growing each day it got closer to going back to Bloukrans for my actual jump. I told myself though that I had to keep my promise to myself and go back. And so we set-off from Port Elizabeth to Tsitsikamma as I took a drive with my mom and sister to go for my bungee jump. While so many things were running through my mind on the way there, I just kept telling myself I will face this fear come hell or high waters. Finally we got there; I paid my fee to participate and got strapped into the gear that would assist when we get to the bridge. We set off as a group to the bridge we were going to jump off and this is how everything went:I remember as we got to the catwalk, which is the see-through bridge we walked on to get to the place where we jump, as my heart started pounding from there. My first thought was to turn back and leave but my courage convinced me to push on. As we were walking along I kept telling myself that I can do this and as I turned my head to see how far the people behind me were, I saw this other lady with tears flowing down her cheeks from her own fear. I swiftly carried along the catwalk with a bit more pace because I did not want her fear to get any close or rub onto me. When we got to the bridge, I was the fourth to jump after watching three people go before me so I got strapped with everything and I remember as I walked to the edge, the coordinator asked me one more time if I was ready and an automatic yes came out of my mouth. I do not think I actually meant that yes but I was trying to convince myself more and not let that coordinator instil fear in me. I got to the edge, toes peeping over the edge, took my last breathe and before I knew it I was in the air, wind rushing in my face and screaming my lungs out. Yes, screaming! It actually felt like my mind shut-down for a couple of minutes after leaving the edge in my leap of faith and then everything came back to me as I was going down, and funny enough while in the air I was still thinking ‘what the hell am I doing’ but then I felt the rope tighten and opened my eyes to the beauty I was surrounded by. The feeling inside I cannot begin to explain, I really cannot put it into words. Nothing can get me to that natural high I felt, it was amazing and as I was taken back up I felt like I was invincible, like I could face anything and come out on top. That is one feeling I want to wake up to every morning, and I have taken all the lessons I learnt from the experience with me.I learnt so much from that experience and the one thing that stood out was the fact that no matter how many doubts you have, always face your fears. It is the greatest thing one can do for their own good in their quest to reach greatness. And the whole experience I went through actually made me apply it all in life situations: ·         Like when I was sent back to come another day- that was the discouragement we each face every day when pushing hard to get what we want·         The fear that multiplied when I got to the catwalk- that showed how even in life, the closer you get to getting what you want or overcoming your fear the more it tries to stop you.·         The lady that was crying behind me- that is what happens when we look around too much and find ourselves seeing more discouraging factors, but we should always focus on what we want.·         Instructor asking me if I am ready- these are the people in life who always want to give us doubts when we at the doorway of realizing and releasing our true potential.These are the lessons I took with me and I will be applying every day in life. I have not reached that point yet where I take on every fear as it plants itself in my mind but I am going there. Did not realise how long I wrote for, but to those who take the time to read this all, face all your fears every day and do not let them grow. What you are left with afterwards is space to just create and be all you want to be. Let’s REPLACE FEAR WITH FAITH.
