AIDS DAY Commemoration in Jo'burg's North

La Sida,

That's AIDS in French. I first heard the phrase when I was about 9 years old. It was the title of a popular Rumba song, one that ironically the older folks gyrated suggestively to. Perhaps to strip the phrase of it's power, after all La Sida was a boogey man of sorts. La Sida was everywhere; killing everyone. And worse than the plague of death it spread was the stench of fear it wrought.

2 decades on, AIDS is still with us Africans. Except today it's debilitating musk of fear has been overpowered by the flowery scent of Hope. In the past decade the rate of infections in those aged 25 and under has decreased, mainly because our younger brothers and sister are a lot more optimistic about tomorrow than our older siblings were. It would seem no social ill is immune to Hope.

So how do we spread this? Well, most of us are informed to the hilt, so it's really just action. Thank goodness for days like today to remind us of what actions to take and thank goodness for 2 organisations; LoveLife and BrothersForLife, that are helping us act in an easy / fun way. Both have fun testing gigs going on today. If u can make it out the office to get tested why not drop in:

*  World AIDS Day in Alex with BrothersForLife @ lunch time @ 2nd Avenue, Between Roosevelt and Selbourne/Sam Buti next to Alex FM.

* LoveLife teams up with Liquideep, for a World Aids Day flash mob @ 3pm @ Cresta Ampitheatre.

Remember the Themba Interactive show at Wits Theatre this evening. 6.30pm. Entrance fee is a donation of some sort.

Thanks for reading. As always, be stellar and love gently and take care of your loved ones.
