Not the daily grind: Cheesekids is opportunity to DO great things

Johannesburg, Thursday, 30 June 2011 - Registrations are now open to serve and have fun. Financial services giant Old Mutual and Cheesekids, the youth organisation that encourages social activism and community service among 18-to-40-year-old South Africans, today launched the Cheesekids Mandela Day 2011 initiative, promoting volunteerism and community service.

With Old Mutual's support, the Cheesekids Mandela Day 2011 event on 17 July will be celebrated in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Volunteers will be required to register for participation on the Cheesekids website, from which they will be directed to central points in the respective cities.

On the day, attendant volunteers will be shuttled from these Central Points to various project sites to perform 67 minutes of coordinated community service and civil action in townships and areas of need. Activities will include visits to old-age homes, planting veggie gardens at schools and painting day-care centres. Food and live entertainment will also be provided.

Thembeka Ngugi, Old Mutual Marketing Executive, says: "This is an exciting opportunity for civic-minded young people to make a difference by dedicating some time to serving their communities. It's a chance for our nation's future leaders, young people - to honour that ethos and to continue the spirit of Youth Month by doing great things.”

The name Mandela has become synonymous with nobility of spirit, and this initiative really does epitomise the ability each of us has to step out of our comfort zones and make a positive impact,” continues Ngugi.

Cheesekids' founding member, Shaka Sisulu, expounds: "This initiative is so valuable precisely because it brings together people of diverse backgrounds who unite in celebration of the essence of Nelson Mandela, while having fun and getting to know different cultures a little better.”

Founded in 2007, Cheesekids boasts over 4,000 members and runs nearly a dozen volunteer programmes every month ranging from school beatifications, education and development, vocational guidance, culture and support of the vulnerable in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

With a national focus on the three big cities in 2011, music radio station and Cheesekids champion 5FM is encouraging listeners to once again change their behaviour by giving back to their communities this Mandela Day.

"5FM has always been first and foremost a music station that entertains youthful South Africans so finding a CSI angle can be challenging due to the seriousness of good causes and the plights of our very own listeners,” comments Justine Cullinan, Marketing Manager of 5FM. "But through this partnership, for the second year now, 5FM can mobilize our listeners to have fun alongside their favourite 5FM DJs, while driving a spirit of volunteerism and sensitivity to those around them.”

The third successive annual event of its kind, Cheesekids Mandela Day 2011 is this year also supported by City-to-City buses, which will shuttle attendees to the respective project sites and the City of Jo'burg, which will host a reward After-Party concert on the same day.

M-Net and its channels will also assist in getting the word out and encourage people to register and be part of this awesome cause. Koo Govender, Director of Corporate Marketing and Communications, says the M-Net Cares brand is passionate about bringing positive change to communities. "We were touched by the enthusiasm and dedication of Cheesekids to get South Africans involved in Mandela Day by organising a fun-filled day with a multitude of worthy initiatives," she adds.
